Smedley United 7
Team WoW 1
(Parrott)
Team WoW will have to look ahead to the secondary finals next week after being convincingly defeated by Smedley United tonight. A Tim Parrott goal early in the first half had fans excited, but as the match wore on, Team WoW faded as Smedley got on top.
The match started well for the boys in black, who looked to be defending solidly. Jonathon Bryan looked lively up front, and had the first shot of the match thanks to a nuts on the defender, but couldn't beat the keeper. In his first match for the team for at least a year, Tim Parrott showed his class. The wily playmaker got forward on a number of occasions early, culminating in a clinical finish for the first goal of the night, after taking it around a couple of defenders from a run down the right wing. He could have scored again shortly after, this time expertly taking the ball around the keeper, but his touch brought him out of position and he couldn't quite finish. Bryan also had a couple of other chances, mostly played through by Parrott, but he could only find the keeper.
Iain Koolhof also made his debut for the club this season in the game, coming on for Bryan up forward, and looked to pressure the Smedley defence. But not long after, it was Smedley United who scored, and started to control the game towards the end of the half. With more possession and chances, the opposition were able to capitalise and managed to score a few goals, with the result that the game was almost beyond Team WoW's reach at half time- the score 4-1.
It was more of the same in the second half, Smedley United taking on several excellent strikes to beat keeper Michael Riske (without whom the score would have been higher). 7-1 was the final score.
Many fans were dissapointed with Team WoW's efforts in the second half. But there were many positives to take out of a game where the team was severely undermanned, perhaps the strongest of which was the man of the match performance of Tim Parrott. George Cass and Alex Kidd looked very sure in defense, and at the start of the match the team looked to be gelling together well. Next week's finals should see a much more committed Team WoW when the result actually matters.
