Team WoW Triumph in Taroona Tester

Team WoW 11 - 3 Slippery Gypsy
(Foster 3, Darling 3, Gale 2, Scott 2, Schaap)

Team WoW returned to winning ways last night, registering an 11 - 3 win in a heated derby against Slippery Gypsy. Again the boys in black were in ill-repair; the majority only turned up moments before kick off. They also had a string of notable absences, including Iain Koolhof and team captain Andy Thompson. The teams could not be separated on paper, with both having had similar runs of form in the league. The pride of Taroona was at stake in this take-no-prisoners matchup.

It was Slippery Gypsy who drew first blood. Andy Thompson has noted that almost every time Jordan Scott loses the ball in attack, a goal is scored at the other end. This proved to be the case for the first goal. Sol Foster put Scott through in a good position but he was caught in possession. The ball went straight to the other end where it was driven past Michael Riske from long range. It seemed it would be a long night for Team WoW but Foster had other ideas. For the first time in 3 weeks his greed paid off. With three players lining up in promising positions, Foster opted for the strike and sent it into the bottom corner. Phil Gale and Wil Darling then went for a rare venture up forward. It paid rich dividends in the form of a sleek cross from Gale and a clinical strike to match from Darling. Slippery Gypsy managed to pull themselves back in it shortly after, however. Team WoW were caught committing too many to the attack and Gypsy broke well: 2 - 2. Gale and Darling weren't done yet though. Again the pair raced forward exchanging the ball between them. This time it was Gale who finished. Team WoW were in the ascendancy and were looking to push for a fourth. Rob Schaap sent Scott loose down the left wing but the forward copped an arm in the face that would limit his game time. He managed to finish the attack but fired straight at the keeper. He soon removed himself and was treated by medical staff. Meanwhile Darling put Team WoW further ahead, the halftime score: 4 - 2.

The second half started with a bang. Scott received a long ball from Foster and controlled it smartly before striking from range, but only found the post. Foster, however, had no such trouble as he smashed home two in quick succession. The first found the left corner from a tight position, the second was hammered straight at the keeper from close range but he could not handle the strike. Wil Darling then completed his hattrick, but unfortunately I cannot remember how. If anyone has any insight on this it would be helpful. Scott managed his first of the night not long after. Schaap sent a quality ball down the left wing. Scott cottoned on late but managed to connect with the ball on the slide, nutmegging the keeper for Team WoW's eighth. In amongst the goals somewhere Slippery Gypsy found their third. Gale made it 9 - 3 in a feat of individual brilliance which saw him beat at least three defenders on his way to goal. He was alone in attack from a tight angle but managed to fire home. Scott then found his second of the night after the ball stuck him in the chest and somehow found its way past the keeper. There was no rest for the poor man in goals, however. Schaap rounded out the win by smashing his shot into the keeper before hammering it out of his hands and into the back of the net: merciless.

With 14 goals shared between the teams, the game could not be accused of lacking excitement. The fact that they were split 11- 3 is largely owing to the keepers. The Slippery Gypsy man was not up to the task set by the Team WoW strikers, who are known for their long range rockets. Meanwhile, Riske was playing out of his skin in the Team WoW goal. Slippery Gypsy played tight passing which often put them one on one with the big man but he was consistently equal to their efforts. He earned himself the Man of the Match award for his solid keeping, narrowly beating an in form Wil Darling.

Team WoW will be in action again next week, facing the Deportivo la' Bangduck academy side at 5:50 at Aurora.
