Where there's no Wil there's no Way: Team WoW Draw with Less than 'Awesome Futsal Team'

Team WoW 6 - 6 Awesome Futsal Team
(Scott 3, Schaap 2, Thompson)

A lacklustre and depleted Team WoW side drew with Awesome Futsal Team last night, throwing away a five goal lead in the process. The boys in black were missing Iain Koolhof, Wil Darling, and any determination whatsoever to win the game. Star striker Andy Thompson was especially in ill-repair, having returned from a spontaneous camping trip just hours before the game. It is expected he will be fined for his actions. The game boasted plenty of goals however, with the teams sharing 12 between them.

Team WoW never looked entirely up for the game, but they got off to an impressive start. Andy Thompson showed a touch of class as he rounded the last defender then, from the tightest of angles, drove the ball home. It took a touch off the near post and then tore open the side netting - such was its force. Though it looked to the untrained eye like a miss, the referee was wise to it and awarded the goal. Jordan Scott was next to put the ball in the back of the net. A pinpoint Phil Gale through ball put him in acres of space but Scott cheekily opted to slide the ball around the last defender before coolly finishing. Scott was also the third name on the scoresheet. A lofted Sol Foster kick-in looked to be destined for the hands of the keeper but Scott expertly lobbed it on the volley over his head, earning him the Jonathon Bryan Gorgeous Chip award. It also prompted Thompson, in a post match interview, to prematurely label it the "goal of the season." Next up was Rob Schaap. He dragged the ball infield before shaking the it onto his left foot to strike from range. It was an absolute ripsnorter to maintain his impressive scoring record. Awesome Futsal Team had been launching a few attacks on the Team WoW goal. One of them finally paid off in the form of a sweet strike into the bottom corner. Team WoW still weren't done for the half, however. Scott returned to the field to snatch his hattrick. His kick-in took a strong deflection off a defender before finding the net. The half time score: 5 - 1.

Team WoW were in the driver's seat, and looked like they would get away with the 3 points even though their performance was lazy. They say it's a game of two halves, however, and that certainly proved to be the case as the second half saw Team WoW squander their impressive lead. Michael Riske had been in stellar form in goals. He had had to face over three times as many shots as usual due to a lethargic defence, but he had been more than up to the task. The pressure told in the second half though, a flurry of Awesome Futsal Team attacks ended in goals. Down the other end, Team WoW managed only one; a powerful freekick from Robbie Schaap took a deflection and found the bottom corner. For the last 2 minutes, the game was on edge at 6 - 5, though nobody on Team WoW knew the score was so close. Sol Foster had a number of opportunites to put the game beyond doubt but squandered them all, prompting chants of 'blame it on the alcoSol' from the crowd. With literally the last kick of the game, the Awesome Futsal Team revival was complete. A last second corner came in, the shot was denied by Riske, but the rebound found an unmarked man, who slid the ball into an empty net. The corner was the result of a questionable indirect freekkick call. Thompson had ended a dangerous attack with an expert tackle. The ball found its way to Riske who picked it up but was shocked to pulled up for it. The shot was deflected out and resulted in the devastating corner. It was a controversial end to the game but ultimately Team WoW can look only to themselves, sloppy defending, not poor refereeing cost them all 3 points.

In a post match interview, Andy Thompson called on Team WoW players, who will not be named, to work on their tempers, a timely word from an experienced captain. He also revealed he would be absent for the first time for the following match. The match pits Team WoW against Slippery Gypsy. Sources reveal the team is comprised mainly of Taroona-born players, meaning it will be Team WoW's first and only derby of the season. The game will be played at 8:20 at Aurora Stadium.
