Team WoW Give Vipers a Taste of Their Own Venom
Team WoW 3 - 1 Vipers
(Scott, Thompson, Schaap)
Team WoW have continued their unbeaten run with a solid victory in their hardest encounter yet. A six man Team WoW triumphed 3 - 1 over a feisty Vipers side that didn't lie down till the final buzzer. Rob Schaap played his first game of the season admirably, putting in a man of the match performance by contributing well to the defence and attack. Again Phil Gale, Wil Darling and Sol Foster were absent. This was the last game Jonathon Bryan would miss before making his full return. Every man on the Team WoW side was fully prepared for the battle, with the exception of Alec, who forgot his shorts and had to play a gross game in thick trousers.
I have no idea how the game started because I didn't arrive till about five minutes in, but I'm guessing it was pretty full on. The Vipers were hard to handle, firing in hard shots from long range. Team WoW drew first blood on the night. A pin-point Andy Thompson pass found the feet of Jordan Scott in acres of space. There's no ice in Tasmania this time of year, but you wouldn't have known it when a composed Scott finished coolly into the bottom corner. Team WoW made it two not long after. Schaap played a devastating nutmeg pass through to Thompson, who bent it with the outside of his boot around a stranded keeper and into the net. Vipers rallied and increased their shot count exponentially. The tactic paid off - a kick in was fired into Riske, off whom it deflected into the net. Team WoW restored their buffer in mere moments, however. Thompson squared the ball to Schaap from kick off, who sent in an uncharacteristic low pearler that beat the keeper well to make it 3 - 1.
In the second half the game exploded into life - though no more goals were scored. A string of ridiculously rough challenges and atrocious refereeing decisions had Peter Thompson fuming on the sidelines. Meanwhile on the field the younger Thompson made his feelings heard to the ref. Team WoW gave as good as they got, however; holding nothing back in some crunching tackles. Scott had a flurry of half-chances and Thompson tested the keeper from a freekick, but the score remained 3 - 1. Riske performed admirably between the posts for Team WoW, and Alex Kidd in front of him also deserves a mention.
Andy Thompson was fuming in post match interviews. "The ref[eree] has lost control of this game tonight," the captain remarked. "Fouls were flying in left, right and centre and nothing was done. I'll be surprised if he's not sacked by morning - he certainly will be if I have anything to do with it."
Team WoW will be back again with long estranged striker Jonathon Bryan next week.
