Team WoW 13 - 1 Van Demons
(Foster 5, Scott 4, Thompson 2, Bryan, Kidd)
Team WoW have cast Van Demons out of finals contention with a brilliant display that ended 13 - 1. A packed Aurora Stadium watched the boys in black dominate their opponents on the night in a game that boasted command (courtesy of Foster), class (courtesy of Thompson) and a touch of comedy (courtesy of Bryan - more on that later). It also boasted an in form Catholic between the posts, one Michael Riske, who kept the opposition's devilish attacks at bay. Team WoW had a full squad in attendance for only the second time this season, which kept the game at a relatively high intensity throughout. Being the last game of the season, it was a must win for the boys, who were aiming for top spot.
Surprisingly, Van Demons were the first to draw blood. Jonathon Bryan played a wild back pass which went out for a corner. A couple of subsequent kick-ins later, they were ahead when a cross was hit first time, nutmegging Alex Kidd and rolling into the bottom corner. From then on, it was largely one way traffic. Scott and Bryan combined well in the fourth minute, with the latter nipping a low, cross-field ball into the former, who took it first time to beat the keeper down low; 1 - 1. The prolific pair then made way for the king of prolificity - Sol Foster, and his sidekick Andy Thompson. Thompson took a bold, but severely wayward strike. Foster characteristically flung a leg out to redirect it for his first and Team WoW's second. He also managed the third - a ripsnorter I'm sure but I can't remember. The fourth went to Alex Kidd, who got his revenge by nutmegging the keeper. Foster completed his hattrick shortly after, smashing one from range to beat the keeper down low; 5 - 1.
There really wasn't a half time talk to speak of. Team WoW were in the ascendency and they knew it. The stirkers were striking, the defenders were defending. Only two questions remained; how many more would Foster score? And, would Bryan score at all (having played attack the whole game)?
The second of those questions was answered early on in the second half with a resounding yes. Bryan intercepted a poor pass from the keeper and proceeded to nutmeg him, taking the count up to two for the night (meaning if Team WoW only counted nutmeg goals they would still win). Scott made it 7 - 1 minutes later. Kidd passed the ball out to him from a corner. The forward pivoted and struck the ball into the bottom corner, despite the keeper getting hands to it. Scott also got the eighth of the night. He took a dazzling corner which might have just taken the slightest of deflections before going in - the second hattrick of the night completed. The only question remaining was would Bryan, the third and final forward on the field score his hattrick. The answer: a resounding no. Foster made it to his favourite number, four, with plenty of time to spare. The striker met a sleek corner first time I believe. Thompson then got on the score sheet - in some style too. The Canadian showed some stunning footwork to elude the final defender on the wing before rifling the shot off the post and in. Foster then made eleven with a very powerful drive from very close range. Thompson completed his brace on the 35 minute mark. A pinpoint aerial ball was receive by Thompson on the chest. He turned and fired into the bottom left corner - no chance for a miserable keeper. Scott stifled any chances of a late comeback for Van Demons on the 38th minute with Team WoW's 13th goal. Kidd played a through ball to Scott as the keeper charged, leaving him with a fairly empty net. He opted to toy with the opposition, however, laying the ball off to Bryan, who returned it to him. The keeper hurried back only to be nutmegged - for the third time - with a curling effort. The entertainment wasn't over yet though. on the 39th, Scott flew down the line with the ball and crossed it to Bryan. He probably thought he'd see a pretty decent goal, but what he got was so much more. Bryan added to his rather large exhibit in the futsal annals of shame with a moment of utter madness which is still baffling futsal analysts and physicists alike. Scott's cross caught the legs of the goal keeper, which virtually stopped it on the line of an empty goal. Bryan was right on hand for the finish, but somehow nutmegged himself with his strike. The embarrassed Baha'i then proceeded to take on the entire team to redeem himself - an effort that saw him fall flat on his stomach at the first hurdle. The only thing that would have added to the comedy and despair would be a goal up the other end, but Van Demons lacked the class on the night.
The game, then, ended 13 - 1. Captain Andy Thompson was full of praise for his teammates after the match. "What can I say? We outplayed them tonight," he commented. "Everybody was doing their thing: Sol scored four, Gale and Kidd defended well, and Bryan gave us all something to laugh and cringe about." Bryan was not available for comment and the end of the game. Next week is finals time, so stay tuned for the time of the game.
jordo mate you get so carried away with bagging me but i was not responsible for them scoring... also didnt get nutmegged trying to score.. the ball was actually moving.. and didn't fall flat on my stomach at the first hurdle trying to take on the entire team, i actually nutmegged some guy. just made that up completely. also didn't play forward the entire game! brief spell in defence wih 3 minutes to go. plus, you should definitely not get the credit for that goal. also i want to add the time i back passed to wil with 10 seconds left on the clock when it was 5-5 against mitch's team, but it went over wil's head and they scored..
